History: This estate was built in about 1855 for Dr. Samuel Mansfield, a druggist. Robert C. Brinkley, originator of the Peabody Hotel, bought it in 1868 or 1869 as a wedding gift for his daughter Annie Overton Brinkley and her husband, Col. Robert Bogardus Snowden. The estate was named “Annesdale” in her honor. The Annesdale mansion and its gardens were home to the prominent Snowden family for seven generations over more than 110 years. It also served as a hospital during the Civil War. The mansion remains one of the oldest homes in Memphis. Following a sale in 2011, it was thoroughly restored at a cost of $1.5 million, and its doors were opened to the public as an event venue in the fall of 2013. A subsequent sale in 2023 raised the likelihood of residential development on its seven acres, but the new owner indicated he would "spend time thinking about how it can best be developed to preserve the property and integrity of the neighborhood."
