More on the 2004 Calendar....

The 75th anniversary of the Orpheum Theatre, one of Memphis’ most beloved cultural landmarks, is celebrated within the new 2004 Memphis Heritage Calendar.  The past and present glory of Orpheum and the remarkable renaissance of downtown Memphis are portrayed in the calendar together with dozens of other historic and contemporary images celebrating the architectural beauty, diversity and creativity of our city.

The cover of the 2004 calendar reproduces a stunning 1917 program guide from the historic Orpheum Theatre.  The Art Nouveau-influenced design shows the figures of two youths, one playing a lyre, on a rich gold background with the words Orpheum Circuit above.  On the back cover of the calendar the spectacular lobby and auditorium of the present-day Orpheum are portrayed. Dozens of other historic and contemporary images are contained within the calendar, including historic photos of Elvis Presley, the Lincoln-America building and Court Square, the Cossitt Library, downtown Memphis from the 1920s to the 1950s, a vintage 1909 poster from the Orpheum, and MLGW’s “Chill Chaser Chariots” from the 1930s. Contemporary color photos of midtown historic homes and districts, the Stax Museum of American Soul Music and Ya Ya the panda show that history is alive and thriving in our city.
