AT MEMPHIS HERITAGE
Regional
Preservation Conference - May 22
The Nine Counties Preservation Alliance, made up of individuals and
organizations representing all nine counties in the east Tennessee
region, announce the schedule for a Regional Preservation
Congress. The conference will be held on May 22nd and will
provide innovative ideas and inspiration for people and organizations
working to save East Tennessee's historic places. The Congress is the
first of its kind in the region and Maryville College will host this
day-long event that will provide workshops, a luncheon and tours for
participants. Registration packets are now available and can be
obtained by calling (865) 523-8008 or sending an e-mail to
info@knoxheritage.org. The registration fee is $20 and includes
the cost of all workshops and
the luncheon.
Workshops at the Congress will include:
- The Economics of Historic Preservation - Ann Bennett (Knoxville /
Knox County Metropolitan Planning Commission) & Kevin DuBose (City
of Knoxville Department of Neighborhood & Community Services)
- An Introduction to Historic Preservation - Nancy Tinker (National
Trust for Historic Preservation, Southern Office)
- When Historic Preservation Becomes a Fight at City Hall: A Case
Study in Knoxville - Victor Ashe (Former Mayor of Knoxville and member
of The National Trust for Historic Preservation Board of Directors)
- The National Register of Historic Places and Historic
Preservation Tax Credits - Claudette Stager (Tennessee Historical
Commission) and Tony VanWinkle (East Tennessee Development District)
- Grassroots Advocacy for Historic Preservation- Kim Trent (Knox
Heritage & The Tennessee Preservation Trust)
- Walking Tour of the College Hill Historic District: What
Style is It? - Tim Ezzell (University of Tennessee Knoxville, Community
Partnership Center). A resident of the Historic District will
also accompany the tour.
- Historic Zoning - Tom Weitnauer (City of Maryville Department of
Planning) and Kevin Chastine (Tennessee Historical Commission)
- Toolbox for Historic Neighborhoods - Historic College Hill
Neighborhood Association Members
Other highlights include:
- A luncheon featuring Nancy Tinker of The National Trust for
Historic Preservation as the guest speaker.
- An evening reception where participants can network with
preservationists from around the region.
- A guided tour of the historic Maryville College Campus.
The Nine County Regional Preservation
Congress is sponsored by The Nine County Preservation Alliance,
Maryville College, The City of Maryville, Wells Fargo Bank, Nine
Counties. One Vision., Knox Heritage, The University of Tennessee
Community Partnership Center, The National Trust for Historic
Preservation and the City of Knoxville.
The Nine County Preservation Alliance
is made up of individuals and organizations representing all nine
counties in the east Tennessee region. The purpose of the Alliance is
to strengthen the ties and interaction between historical organizations
and preservation groups and to provide them with the following benefits:
- A unified voice on preservation
issues throughout the region
- Access to technical assistance
- Assistance with project planning
- Assistance with grant writing and
identification of other funding sources
- Education for the public about
historic preservation
- Networking opportunities
