MHI New Office Location in Historic South Main Arts District

In mid-April Memphis Heritage began the exciting process of moving to a home within the South Main Street arts district. It was a move that has been on the drawing board for executive director June West virtually ever since she began working at Memphis Heritage in January 2003, and one that has had the full and enthusiastic support of the MH board of directors.

“This move places us in the heart of the South Main Historic District’s art community and it will enhance our visibility tremendously,” said West.  “It’s a fabulous space, and we have had a tremendous amount of support from the MH staff, individual board members, volunteers and the community in making this a reality.”

The new location, at 509 S. Main Street, is about a half-block north of Central Station and was formerly an art gallery.  West and the MH board are planning to develop the front of the office space for retail and public use.  Merchandise related to historic preservation, Memphis and Shelby County history and architecture, including historic photos from the Don Newman collection, will be on sale to the public.  The Memphis Heritage offices will be in the rear portion of the building.

MH board member and designer John Griffin played a key role in laying out the space so that it could be adapted for both office and retail use. Office modules donated by TRO/Architects were painstakingly moved and installed and will provide comfortable and efficient work spaces for the MH staff.

Most exciting of all, the building offers a venue for engaging the public and pedestrians in the South Main Street district.  West anticipates an immediate need for volunteers to welcome visitors and operate the retail portion of the space. To volunteer, email info@memphisheritage.org
