Trolley Night unveiling draws crowds to MHI on South Main

Sales said brisk for unique 18-month edition, featuring Elvis memorabilia matched to Don Newman photos

Officials of Memphis Heritage, Inc and Elvis Presley Enterprises unveiled the latest MHI calendar to enthusiastic crowds at Novembers Trolley Night event in downtown South Main. A much anticipated annual publication, this year's calendar is expected to please both fans of Elvis and Memphis history buffs alike, featuring richly detailed photos of Don Newman's Memphis paired with artifacts from the rock legend's life.

The 2005 calendar is sponsored in its entirety by Elvis Presley Enterprises. This unique 18th month wall edition presents vintage Don Newman photographs as they relate to Elvis Presley's life and times. Supplemented by anecdotes, images of artifacts and documents from the Graceland Archive, the calendar offers a glimpse of Elvis’ Memphis, the footsteps of the King of Rock and Roll as he walked the streets so eloquently photographed by Don Newman.

Peter Guralnick, noted music historian and author of critically acclaimed Elvis Presley biographies including Last Train to Memphis, Careless Love, and Elvis Day by Day wrote a special introduction to this year’s calendar.

This year’s calendar release celebration took place on Friday, November 26th  at the MHI headquarters located at 509 S. Main Street.  Angie Marchese, manager of the Graceland Archives Department, attended the unveiling and accepted a framed Newman photo of Graceland in appreciation of Graceland's participation. Trolley Night (so known because the trolley is free that evening) is a regular South Main attraction, occurring on the last Friday of each month.

Photographs used in the calendar and a few significant Elvis Presley documents will be exhibited at MHI through December. Following this same theme, in March 2005 Graceland will unveil an extraordinary yearlong exhibit using several mural-size Don Newman photographs in conjunction with actual artifacts and archives from the vaults of their repository.

The upper page for each month of the calendar features a different photograph of a Memphis landmark or scene, most up to 8x10 in size. Memphians have grown to love these Newman photos for their detail and complexity. In the calendar grid on the lower half, Graceland archivists have included specially chosen images of artifacts or documents related to the landmark pictured above. For example, a handwritten return authorization for an item Elvis purchased at Lowenstein's is paired with a magnificent photograph of the famed Memphis department store.

The calendar grids highlight not only the customary holidays and Memphis Heritage events, but also events and milestones in the singer's own life. (For example, the day Elvis graduated from Humes High School, in 1953.

All paid MHI members will receive one free calendar and can purchase ten (10) or more at a discount. This 18 month calendar will sell for $10 (slightly more on the web to cover handling and mailing charges.) The calendars will be available for purchase through the Memphis Heritage gift shop at 509 S. Main, or on line at www.memphisheritage.org. Davis Kidd Booksellers, Otherlands, and Burke’s Bookstore will also be selling the calendars. All profit from the sale of these calendars goes to aid Memphis Heritage in their ongoing historic preservation efforts.
