AT MEMPHIS HERITAGE
2003 Preservation Awards - Winners Announced!
At the 27th annual Preservation Awards
ceremony held Thursday, September 18, at the new Downtown Elementary School,
the first new school to be located in Downtown Memphis in over a century, Memphis Heritage Inc. and the Memphis Landmarks
Commission saluted the exemplary preservation,
restoration, and rehabilitation efforts of the saviours of Memphis' historic homes,
commercial buildings, and historic sites.
The honorees in each category are

- The Mayor's This Old House Award, for restoration or rehabilitation
of a private historic home: 308 Stonewall, owned and rehabilitated
by Gil and Becky Callaway, Level Construction.
- Residential Rehabilitation Award, for the restoration or rehabilitation
of a building or group of buildings for multi-family residential use including
the adaptive re-use of commercial or industrial buildings for residential
use: F.G. Barton Cotton Co. Building, 115 S. Front, developed
by Matthews Brothers Development Co., design by Architecture Inc., contracting
by Barnett-Naylor Construction Services Group.
- Paul Gruenberg Commercial Rehabilitation Award, for the preservation,
rehabilitation or restoration of a commercial building, including adaptive
re-use of buildings for commercial use: Ericson Group Offices,
400 N. Front, developed by Ericson and Associates LLC, design by Architecture
Inc.; Certificate of Merit: Junior Achievement of Memphis and the Mid-South
Inc. for Exchange City, 307 Madison, design by Hnedak Bobo Group, contracting
by Linkous Construction.
- Institutional/Public Building Rehabilitation Award, for the
preservation, rehabilitation or restoration of a museum, church, synagogue,
school or government building or the adaptive reuse of commercial or industrial
buildings for one of these purposes: Power House, 45 G.E.
Patterson, owned by MATA and The Alexander Co., occupied by Delta Axis,
design by building studio, construction by Construction Management Plus.
- New Construction Award - commercial project, for compatible
new construction in a historic context: Soulsville, 870 E. McLemore,
design by Looney Ricks Kiss Architects in association with Self Tucker Architects,
construction by Flintco.
- New Construction - residential project: Evergreen Place,
North Willett and Lake Place, developed by Hansom Homes Inc. and The
Cowles Co., design by Lavelle Walker.
- Compatible Addition Award, honoring the compatible addition
to a historic building: 1565 Central, owned by Kenny and Laura Charbonnet,
design by John Griffin, construction by Garland Sullivan; Certificate
of Merit: Stan and Rosalie Gibson, architect Andy Morton and contractor
Jim Box for rear addition to the Gibsons' home, 1900 Vinton.
- Special Achievement Award, for excellence in: engineering
relating to the preservation, rehabilitation, or restoration of a structure;
or, the investigation of archeological sites; or, a specific noteworthy
component of a restoration project: FedExForum site archeological
investigation, undertaken by New Memphis Arena Public Building Authority,
archeology by Weaver and Associates LLC.
- Memphis Heritage Kay Newman Award, honoring volunteer preservation
activities: preservation consultant, John Griffin.
- Memphis Heritage A.W. Willis Award, honoring professional preservation
activities: Memphis Housing Director, Robert Lipscomb.
