2003 Preservation Course Features Design “Born in the ‘50s”

Were you born in the ‘50s? If so, like millions of other baby boomers, you come from an era that many now regard as “historic.”

In recognition of the growing interest in the architecture and design born of the ‘50s, Memphis Heritage is offering a course titled “The Face of Memphis After World War II,” through the University of Memphis Continuing Education. This course includes a survey of the architecture, city planning, suburban development, interior design and fashion ideas that influenced the national and local scenes after World War II.  Experts in these fields will take you on a fun and fascinating cruise through the ‘50s, including an introduction to the designers who shaped our own city and region. A field trip to visit a 1950s private residence is also included.

The class will be held Monday evenings from 7 to 8:30 p.m., March 3 to 24, at the Junior League of Memphis’ Community Resource Center, 3475 Central Ave.  Course instructors include preservationists Judith Johnson and Michael Sicuro, architectural historian James Ramsey, author Nancy Muse, and Flashback owner Millett Vance. To register, call the University of Memphis Continuing Education at 678-6000.  For more information on the course, call Carnita Witherspoon at 678-5772.  The course fee is $55, and includes a year’s membership in Memphis Heritage.
